The Marin County Athletic League requires that all persons who coach in the league must have passed coaching courses. The league offers coaching education courses to their coaches based on the text of the American Sports Education Program (A.S.E.P.) "Successful Coaching" and materials from the California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) Coaches who pass the ASEP and CIF tests will have their names placed on the National Registry list. Coaches who attend Sports First Aid & CPR course will receive a 2-year certification.

MCAL member schools pay the registration fee for the MCAL coach. Coaches from outside of the MCAL are invited to join the MCAL classes. The fee for coaches outside the MCAL is $100 for Saturday only, $35 for Sunday only or $125 for both days. The fees cover text, instruction, initial testing and certification. The Coaching Principles Course covers coaching philosophy, coaching styles, communication, motivation, setting goals, season planning, teaching sports skills, off-season training, risk management, self-management and team management.
